Etta Marcus has officially released her highly anticipated project titled "The Death Of Summer & Other Promises". The rollout for this project started back in August with "Theater", October with "Little Wing", November with "Snowflake Suzie", and January with "Girls That Play" followed by the project itself. This "mini album", has met all promises of its greatness. It's vast sonically, lyrically, and vocally, showcasing Marcus's abilities in all facets of her music.
"Theatre"
Track one opens up strong. “Theatre” has an unexpected arrangement which makes it so special. At first, you think it’s going to be this tranquil song. However, a creep of drums starts to peak their way in while the chorus begins. Marcus belts “I want to be loved” over the chorus. This is the best part of the song as it truly showcases her vocals and raw emotions on the track. Her vocals are sultry and complement the style of this track perfectly.
"Lovesick Boy Prays"
This song is something special. Deviating from the robust sounds of the previously released singles, this song is more stripped back. Etta has a calm and enchanting sense to her vocals which makes this track feel so atmospheric. The chorus on this song is one of the best things put out in a while. The rhyming in the lyrics, the airiness, and the vocals, it is all there. This track has it all.
"Snowflake Suzie"
This track stands out in comparison to others. Being fueled by a base of angst and a splash of anger the track is driven by passion which is clear in the delivery. The grit and twang in her voice is amazing. All parts of this song blend seamlessly and have a more alt-pop rock type of mix to it. After the previous track which is a more calm and tranquil moment on the tracklist, this one stands out in a good way. The drums and build-up of the pre-chorus mixed with her airy vocals make the chorus hit so hard and convey her message even further.
"Girls That Play"
Opening with delicate layered vocals, "Girls That Play" has a softness to it when you press play. As the song progresses, more instrumentation is added, and the song starts to pick up. This song has a movie soundtrack-esque vibe, which makes it so special. The chanting chorus moment is like a call to action from the singer as she exclaims, "Suit up, hitch up the saddle". The energy that builds in this song is fueled by her emotions and vocals on all parts.
"Skin Parade"
This song greets the listener with a beautiful, full, and cinematic intro. This song serves as a more enchanting song than the previous full-throttle track that was "Girls That Play". "Skin Parade" showcases Etta's ability to provide soothing and calm vocals. Give her guitars strumming, light percussion, and a microphone and she will always be able to deliver a beautiful song, this song is a testament to that.
"Little Wing"
"Little Wing" builds as the song progresses getting better with each minute and play you give it. The instrumentation on "Little Wing" is full and lively as it helps direct the listener to this reflective story. Etta's vocals blend with the atmosphere of this song seamlessly, making it a powerful listen. This track is a personal narrative of Etta's life and is very special.
"Fruit Flies"
This track has an interesting composition with a section being just an acaplla. This raw vocal section adds a touch of vulnerability and warmth to this track. It pushes the emotional appeal this song has and makes it stick out. The vocals on this song are soothing and warming but have a tinge of a somber feel. This song is another hit added to Etta's discography.
"Dog Eyes"
The closing track on this project doesn't fail to deliver. Soothing and darker than some other songs. this track has a deep atmosphere to it which is evdient. throughout. This song has some similarities to some songs from Lana Del Rey's "Ultraviolence". "Dog Eyes" has winding melodies that take off for Etta vocally. She showcases yet again her abilities in the song.
