Laye has officially released her latest EP titled "losers". This is the follow-up to her 2019 album "lonesome" This EP has 8 tracks, some of which were already put out as singles. "You're my achilles heel", "touching myself", "blue", and "Unhappier" were released before the full-length project. Laye's EP "losers" adds a moody, melodic, and magnetic collection of songs to her current discography.
This EP has a very cohesive sound, mixing elements of pop, alternative, indie, and rock together. Laye does a wonderful job making all of her songs flow exceptionally well. Songs like "touching myself", "backseat driver", "sunday scaries", and "I saw god" are songs that stick out on this project. With production from Brian Philips, Colyer, Gray Hawken, JT Roach, Oscar Neidhardt, Scott Effman, and Stephen Aiello, this EP has seamless sonics and instrumentals to accompany the vocals and lyrics throughout.
"I saw god"
As the EP opener, this track has a more stripped approach to it, which makes it sound so mesmerizing. Laye's vocal abilities come through on tracks like this. As the song progresses, the layers of this song increase, making it even more enjoyable than the first listen. "I saw god" is a fantastic track, and a great way to open up this project.
"you're my achilles heel"
This track is a moody song with a low tempo and beat. The production on this track is well done and helps exemplify the lyrics. Moments like the bridge are great examples of how amazing this track is. "you're my achilles heel" was already released prior, but is another great song to listen to.
"sunday scaries"
Track 3 "sunday scaries" is one of the best on this EP. Production, sonics, vocals, and lyrics are all up there. The pop-punk self-aware anthem that is this song, makes it a captivating listen. "sunday scaries" has the relatability and the vulnerability that makes it super catchy and increases that replay value that Laye is so good at creating.
"touching myself"
This track mixes a more upbeat tempo and angsty production with her vocals. The chorus is super catchy and memorable and gets you hooked on the rest of the song. This is the best track on this project as it has a high replay value. This song has to be playlisted and shared amongst many different platforms and audiences because it is so good.
"my last cigarette"
The concept of this song is fueled by the well-written lyrics. It flows well and has great production and mesmerizing vocals. "my last cigarette" is another one of the gem tracks that Laye has put on this project. Her style is prominent and evident on a track like this, another great listen.
"blue"
Almost at the end of this EP, "blue" keeps the listener's attention. Again, another example of a good flow that the listener can ride throughout the song. The melodic and vocally pleasing "blue" is a testament to Laye's abilities.
"Unhappier"
The second to last track on this project, "Unhappier" has that "it factor". Funky electric guitars, which are then drowned out by hard-hitting drums, showcase superior production. This song has witty and vengeful lyrics to it, which make it fun to listen to. Laye is describing her hopes and wishes towards her last partner, and as the listener, you can't help but feel the same way she does.
"backseat driver"
The last track on this EP, "backseat driver" shows a more vulnerable side to Laye. The closing track uses metaphors about cars to exemplify her emotions concerning her life not going the way she plans. This track is relatable and a powerful way to close out this project.
Overall Laye's "losers" has been a long time coming since her last full-length release in 2019. This project satisfies the craving Laye's fans have had since then. The only wish for the project was that it was longer. This EP is cohesive, captivating, and charismatic and leaves the door open for fans as they hope for more music from the singer. This project was released under Sony Music Entertainment Canada.
