On October 15, 1973 the now legendary rock band Fleetwood Mac dropped their eighth studio album: Mystery to Me. This would be the last album that featured rock-guitarist Bob Weston who was evidently kicked out for rumored affairs with Mick Fleetwood's wife, Jenny Boyd. But his melody did not disappoint, time has proven that scandal could only make the band better. This album contains twelve tracks & starts to veer away from the traditional blues rock of the early 70's. Additionally, they start to incorporate more of a folk/pop feel that will soon be in full force when lead-singer Stevie Nicks joins the band in 1975. Each song tells a story, Jason Elias from Allmusic.com says "Despite the all-encompassing ethos, Bob Welch's songwriting skills made him walk a fine line between the mystical and the silly." Each song contains an aura of whimsicality that brought this to rank 67 on Billboards 200 in December of 1973. Although not their most high-selling album, I can confidently say that it is criminally underrated. People often overlook the time period before Nicks and even musician Lindsey Buckingham. But there's never a good reason to miss out on iconic music.
A song that stuck out to not only me but many others is "Hypnotized." This became a radio staple for the time period, also striking inspiration for the name of the album. It goes through the story of someone witnessing alien life form on earth. This talks about the possibilities that go beyond our own comprehension, using specific references for the audience to piece together. Incorporating those same bluesy feels for background vocals that they were used to, while also creating a more upbeat tone to the song. Go beyond the albums with Nicks, and discover the electric sound of Mystery to Me.
