Serving as the second single from his upcoming album "Something to Give Each Other", Troye Sivan's latest single "Got Me Started" takes listeners into the full-fledged dance-pop world he has created. This track was produced by pop mastermind and 5-time Grammy nominee Ian Kirkpatrick and has an upbeat and dreamy vitality to it. Kirkpatrick has worked on iconic pop tracks like "Don't Start Now" & "New Rules" by Dua Lipa, as well as "Bad Liar" & "Back to You" by Selena Gomez.
This track samples "Shooting Stars" by Bag Raiders. Being a very recognizable instrumental, its integration is a disservice to this track, distracting from the infectious chorus and verse. The sample comes in a very unnatural and paused manner. It creates a disconnect between the song itself and the sampled instrumental section. The chorus and verses are catchy, clever, and consistent, which is then interrupted by this sampled instrumental. This song could have done without this sample, as it distracts from the greatness that it could've been.
Other than the sample, the production of the sonics and vocals provides a disco-tech vibe, which carries the catchy writing on this track. Troye's vocals and the accompanying effects do a great job demonstrating the atmosphere this song is describing. The lyrics of the song appear to be about a lover. The song describes being with them, and as Troye puts it, not wanting to "go home alone, alright". The lyrics are straightforward but suit the track perfectly for the message it's portraying. With writing credits from Leland, Ian Kirkpatrick Tayla Parx, Stylaz Fuego, Jack Glass, Christopher Stracey, and Troye himself, this song is stacked with many professionals, as well as newcomers.
Overall, this song had the potential to be a pop hit but was cut short due to the introduction of a sample that's so recognizable it did more damage than good. "Got Me Started" was an interesting follow-up to his hard-hitting lead single "Rush". Sivan's album "Something to Give Each Other" is out on October 13th this year. Fans are eagerly awaiting this release, as it marks his first full-length project since his 2018 album "Bloom". This project was released under Universal Music Australia and will serve as track number 7 on his album.
